Lily watched as James messed up his hair, biting back a smile when he quickly stopped. He thought she hated it, but she actually found it somewhat attractive. That was why she hated it. She hated anything that made her attracted to him.
“Figured,” she rolled her eyes playfully, letting out a small laugh as she did so. When he asked if he could ask her a question, a brief look of concern crossed her features, but she hid it by nodding, and keeping her expression neutral.
“What is it, Potter?” Lily questioned when he didn’t ask right away.
She couldn’t help but worry of what he was going to ask her. Would she answer truthfully? Of course she would. It was just nerve-wracking, and she wouldn’t know what to do if he asked her something about her feelings, or something of the sort.
"I just…I wanted to know…" he began but suddenly he found himself hesitating. It was not lack of confidence, because that’s just something you can’t expect from James Potter, it was just that he didn’t want to scare her away by making her feel uncomfortable or something like that. "I wanted to know why you changed your mind….About going out with me, I mean." he said it once and for all, before he could regret it.
The headboy just needed to know. He needed to know what changed so he could keep it up since it was clearly working for him.
So he gave her a slight smile, waiting for her answer, as if it could somehow, encourage her to be honest with him (and with herself).
